DAY EXCURSION - Smoke Sauna Afternoon

Smoke Sauna Afternoon

YEAR ROUND PROGRAM (Subject to certain close-outs)

DURATION: 3-4 hours including transfers

The oldest form of Sauna in Finland is the smoke sauna, and it is said that Finland has the longest established history of Sauna in all of Europe!

The smoke sauna, or "savusauna" is traditionally heated with wood for many hours before it is possible use it.  The smoke collects in the room from under the stones, and when the sauna is up to a good heat, the smoke is let out of the room, leaving a smell of smoke, but clean breathing air that is once again oxygenated.  The sauna does not have a chimney, so once the smoke has been ventilated after heating, casting water on the stones begins and the Carbon Monoxide is released from the vent.

There are altogether 3000kg of stones in our smoke sauna and it takes 7 hours to heat (so booking the day before is a must!), using 1 meter long Birch logs with some Alder which creates a nice smell.  It takes 1/3 of a cubic metre of wood to heat up the sauna fully, and the heat in the sauna can last from 12 - 20 hours, depending on the temperature outdoors!

Temperature in the sauna is between 75-85 degrees C, around average for Finnish sauna.  The sauna room is large, so the heat is quite mellow, adding water intensifies the feeling of heat and adds moisture to the air inside.

The Lake at the end of the pier is summer can reach a warm 20 degrees C or more, and in high winter, the water is around 0 degrees C, but by using a circulating pump, the water is kept from freezing so guests can enjoy a dip in the ice hole - if you dare!

Our sauna sessions are between 1-2 hours.  If booking as a private session, we offer 2 hours of Sauna, shower, private relaxation room and pier for swimming (all year! - It is heated in winter and a safe icehole with ladder prepared).  If booking with our small group session, the total session is 2 hours, in which guests would take turns in the sauna and shower room.  There is a good amount of privacy during shared sessions, as the sauna and shower / dressing room are seperate from the relaxation room where other guests can wait by the open fire or on the terrace.
