What to do in a 6 hour layover at Helsinki Airport

So…..you have arrived at Helsinki Airport on your way to Europe or the Far East? You have more than 5 hours to kill at the airport and no ideas. Let us introduce a few good ones if you don’t need a visa or if you can get one before arriving here.

Let us first explain the distances from the Airport:

Airport – Porvoo Old Wooden Town – 48 kilometers, Drive time non-rush hour 40 minutes one way, rush hour 50-55 minutes one way.

Airport – Helsinki Archipelago and Islands – 33 kilometers, Drive time non-rush hour 35 minutes one way, rush hour 40 minutes one way.

During a 6 hour layover you would have to take into account max. 1-2 hours for transfers. This leaves 2-4 hours for your chosen activity and for skipping back through security at Helsinki Vantaa.

Roy roos Helsinki cathedral coloursIn around 3 hours, you would have time to see Helsinki’s major sights, such as the Senate Square, Helsinki Catherdral, South Harbor market and possibly the Church in the rock. Also if timed properly, visit to the Sibelius monument is possible. This would definetly give you an idea of Helsinki and maybe invite you to stop over for a night in Helsinki on your next journey.  From 17th June – 8th August, everyday (with the exception of Midsummer Weekend) The Sibelius Tour & Experience is running on request, taking you Sibelius_Finland_experience_800x500on a guided tour of Helsinki, followed by a fantastic Sibelius Experience Showing at Helsinki’s Music Centre, home to the Sibelius Academy.  Right next door you can see Finlandia Talo, Alvar Aalto’s famously designed building.

If one would like to see an authentic small Finnish town with some of the best kept wooden buildings from 18th century with it’s art and craft shops, cafe’s and the beautiful atmoshphere then Porvoo is a fantastic option. With 3 hours to spare in Porvoo, you can walk the old wooden town many times over, see the most important cathedral in Finland, where the Finnish constituion from 1809 was underwritten by Tsar Alexander I and enjoy a coffee, lunch or a short meal at one of the restaurants in Porvoo, Definite must for any one wanting to see a bit of Old Finnish History.

The Finnish Archipelago is one of the largest of it’s kind in the world. Access to it from the Helsinki Airport is very easy and achievable. During a summer evening 3 -4 hour visit archipelago tableto the islands, it’s forest, summer cafe on Komsalö island is very, Very relaxing way to break up your long flight to your next destination. Visiting the Archipelago can be done even during the evening if you visit Helsinki Airport in June, july or August, Mid June to Mid July the sun set’s only at 22:30 offering plenty of light and even more atmoshpere.
The Archipelago plays a major part in Southern Finlands recreational living, where people escape from the mainland to holiday, relax and to enjoy clean sea water, fresh air and awesome scenery.  There is option for Sauna too….
